These boards of pharmacy have a mandate to protect the public from unsafe and ineffective pharmacy care, and each board has been given responsibility to regulate the practice of pharmacy in its respective state. Each state requires applicants to take and pass the NAPLEX in order to obtain a license to practice as a registered pharmacist.
To take the NAPLEX, you must meet the eligibility requirements of the board of pharmacy from which you seek licensure.
If you are determined to be eligible, the board will notify NABP of your eligibility. Once that happens, a letter will be issued to you by Pearson VUE, the test administrator, with information about how to schedule your testing appointment.
Of these, questions will be used to calculate your test score. The remaining 50 items serve as experimental questions and do not affect your score. The questions do not involve high-tech clinical pharmacy or equipment. Note, too, that you will not be tested on all the content you were taught in pharmacy school.
To properly analyze and answer the questions, you must refer to the information provided in the patient profile. Other questions are answered solely from the information provided in the question. Each format is described with examples in the sections that follow. An example of a multiple-choice question is provided:. The premise of these questions is very similar to K questions, but more options are available.
These can be broken down into a series of true and false statements. An example multiple-response question is provided:. The constructed-response format is simply a fill-in-the-blank style of question. Although the NABP has not given much guidance regarding the use of these questions, the examples they have provided have largely been calculation questions answered to the nearest whole number.
In the examples provided by the NABP, the units of the final answer have been stated in the question, as in the constructed-response example here:. The ordered-response format is designed for the test taker to assign ranks to an unordered list of options.
The NABP has listed a sample question in this format to rank topical corticosteroids from highest to lowest potencies.
Another example of an ordered- response question is provided:. ALL options must be used. The hot-spot format is designed for the test taker to identify the correct portion of a diagram that is related to the question presented.
The question displays a diagram of the HIV life cycle and asks the test taker to identify the portion of the life cycle during which maraviroc exerts its mechanism of action. Another example of a hot-spot question is provided here:.
Using the diagram below, identify where on a ventricular action potential ibutilide would exert the greatest effect. Select the TEXT response, and left-click the mouse. To change your answer, move the cursor, select alternate TEXT response and click. This revision decreased the blueprint to include 2 Competence Areas. Despite the change in the structure of the competency statements, there is not much difference in content between previous years.
The new competency statements and blueprint are covered in this review book. Nonetheless, reviewing the subcategories under the two major Competence Areas may assist you in preparation for the exam and these are available through the NABP website listed. For specific subcategories under each competence area, go to www. Content and Structure. Multiple-Choice Format. Posted by Ms Rx Geek - 4 Comments. I have heard that the rxprep didnt do a good job going over compounding. What are your thoughts? It is not the strongest but honestly covers the basic you need for the exam. The exam tests three fundamental areas of competence: managing drug therapy, safely and accurately preparing and dispensing medications, and providing drug information and promoting public health.
These questions require both a fundamental knowledge of pharmacy as well as the ability to interpret patient information. Most other questions are standard, so-called "stand-alone" multiple-choice items in which a question is asked and answer choices are offered but no patient profiles are given.
The NAPLEX follows the one-best-answer rule, in which several choices may be plausible, but only one answer choice is the best. You will encounter both single-answer and combined-response questions. In single-answer questions, you must choose the best option for completing a statement or answering a question.
In combined-response questions, you must choose among several combinations of answer components. You will have approximately 6 hours to complete questions on a computer. There are two optional ten minute scheduled breaks.
Fifty of the questions on the exam are pretest questions and will not affect the student's score. However, there is no way of knowing which items are pretest questions so students should answer each question as though it counts. Test takers cannot return to a question once they have submitted the answer. A scaled score of 75 or better is considered passing. There is no longer a minimum number of questions you must answer to receive a score.
Unanswered questions are scored as wrong. You should answer all questions, even if you have to guess. First, contact the board of pharmacy in the state in which you want licensure. The state board will issue paperwork and instructions.
The state board will determine your eligibility to test and will notify the NABP. You will then be issued an Authorization to Test, which has the following information:. Next, schedule your examination with Sylvan Prometric.
You will need your Authorization to Test information to schedule a test date. However, knowing the content doesn't guarantee a high score. And you need to make sure you can answer the questions in the allotted time! There is nothing more frustrating than running out of time on a standardized test.
There will be many questions where you won't know the answer. Good test-takers won't panic!
They will systematically eliminate the distracters they know are wrong and will then guess and move on. Let our expert teachers be your guide with a prep course that fits your schedule. Skip to Main Content. What to Expect You will have approximately 6 hours to complete questions on a computer.

Please note: Changes to the eligibility and resit request policies were implemented on February 4, Read more about these changes below or in the new bulletin.
It is during this step that the board of pharmacy in the state for which you are seeking licensure will determine your eligibility to take the NAPLEX. They review the information you provided in your e-Profile and your application. Once the board determines that you are eligible, you will receive an email instructing you to purchase the exam. When you are ready to purchase the exam so that you can schedule it at the test center, log in to your NABP e-Profile again.
Go to Exam Services to purchase your exam and pay the appropriate fee. If the name in your e-Profile does not match your IDs, you will be turned away on the day of the test. NABP offers discounts for members of the armed forces and their spouses.
Fees for repeat attempts and resitting fees will not be reimbursed. All submissions are made via your e-Profile, not through email correspondence. You must apply for the discount prior to purchasing the approved services.
If you need test-day accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act, instructions and a link to the form can be found in the Bulletin. The form is also available for download in the online application. If you select Colorado, Florida, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon, Utah, or Rhode Island for your primary jurisdiction, you will need to upload the forms during the application process.
The ATT includes the dates during which you are eligible to take the examination as well as an authorization number. Please note that you cannot schedule your exam unless you have an ATT. When your ATT arrives, make sure that the name printed on it matches your primary and secondary forms of ID. If they do not match, you will not be admitted into the testing center.
The NAPLEX Competency Statements offer important information about the knowledge, judgment, and skills you are expected to demonstrate as an entry-level pharmacist. A strong understanding of the Blueprint will aid in your preparation to take the examination. Start your pharmacy career off on the right foot and follow all examination rules.
If you have witnessed such misconduct or other irregularities as described in the Bulletin, please report it to NABP immediately. The video below provides an overview of the consequences of exam misconduct. Please note that you will be charged fees for rescheduling and missed appointments. Our eligibility and resit request policies have been updated and will be reflected in the new Bulletin that will be published in the first week of February Some exceptions may apply, as NABP member boards retain the authority to determine the number of attempts per candidate in their jurisdiction.
If your eligibility period is 10 business days or fewer you will need to submit a new application and the board will need to enter new eligibility dates for you. When your eligibility period is set to expire within 10 business days it can be extremely difficult to purchase an exam and to schedule an appointment to test before the eligibility period expires.
We encourage you to purchase your examinations as soon as you are granted eligibility and to schedule an appointment to test as soon as you receive your Authorization to Test ATT letter to ensure that your requested appointment time can be accommodated.
You will need to submit a Resit Request Form and supporting documentation within three business days of your missed appointment to qualify for the reduced fee. Emergency situations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine what, if any, fees would be changed. Resit fees apply when you miss your scheduled testing appointment without following the proper cancellation procedures; this includes when you are turned away at the testing center for having improper identification and arriving late for your scheduled appointment.
If you miss your appointment your ATT will no longer be valid, therefore, you must purchase a resit to get a new ATT to schedule a new testing appointment. We encourage you to review the Bulletin prior to requesting a resit to ensure that you have the most current procedures.
